Dingwall (Scand., 'court hill;' see THING), the county town of Ross-shire, near the head of the Cromarty Firth, and at the entrance to the valley of Strathpeffer, 13½ miles NW. of Inverness (by rail 18½). It has the county buildings (1845), a public park, a small harbour, and an obelisk, 57 feet high, which marks the grave of Sir George Mackenzie, first Earl of Cromarty. A royal burgh since 1226, it unites with Wick and four other towns to return one member to parliament. Pop. (1861) 2099; (1881) 1921; (1891) 2300.
