Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction, p. 181

Echlon (Fr. échelle, 'ladder'), is such a formation of troops that, if viewed from a height, they would resemble a staircase. Each division behind has its front clear of that in advance, so that, by marching directly forward, it can form line with it.
