Frieze

Frieze, in classical architecture, the central portion of the Entablature (q.v.). Vitruvius also calls it the Zophorus ('life-bearing') from its being frequently ornamented with sculpture. Similarly, the term frieze is sometimes applied to any enriched horizontal band.
