Iowa City, capital of Johnson county, Iowa, and the seat of the territorial and state government from 1839 to 1856, is situated on the Iowa River, 120 miles by rail E. of Des Moines. The old capitol is now the home of the state university. The town has a foundry and a number of mills and factories. Pop. (1880) 7123; (1890) 7106.
