Kalamazoo, capital of Kalamazoo county, Michigan, is finely situated on the river of the same name, 144 miles by rail ENE. of Chicago. It is the seat of the state insane asylum and of Kalamazoo College (Baptist). The city is the meeting-place of three important railways, and has some fifty busy manufactories of machinery, paper, flour, carriages, windmills, agricultural tools, furniture, &c. Celery is grown in large quantities near the town. Pop. (1890) 17,853.
