Kanara, NORTH, a coast district of Bombay, the most southerly in the Konkan (q.v.), lies south-east of Goa, and has an area of 3911 sq. m.; pop. (1891) 446,351, mostly Hindus, speaking Kanarese (see INDIA, p. 103). For the most part it is a wild forest-country.—SOUTH KANARA, immediately south of North Kanara, belongs to Madras. Its area is 3902 sq. m.; pop. (1891) 1,056,051, over four-fifths Hindus. This district also contains a great extent of forest-land, and numerous wild animals. The capital is Mangalore. Both North and South Kanara are partly occupied by the Western Ghāts, contain numerous rivers, and have a heavy rainfall. In both, also, malaria is very prevalent, especially during the monsoon.
