Kitchen-midden (Dan. kjøkken-mødding), mounds in Denmark, N. Scotland, &c., prehistoric refuse-heaps. They are mostly formed of oyster-shells and other shellfish; contain only stone, bone, or wood implements; and bones of the dog and wild animals. See ANTHROPOLOGY, MAN, STONE AGE.
