La Crosse, capital of La Crosse county, Wisconsin, stands on the Mississippi, at the mouth of La Crosse River, and at the junction of six railways, 195 miles by rail WNW. of Milwaukee. It contains a Roman Catholic cathedral and over a score of other churches, a convent, an orphanage, two hospitals, excellent schools, and a public library. The city has a large trade in lumber and grain. The manufactures include farming-implements, engines and boilers, sashes and blinds, &c., and there are several large lumber-mills, iron-foundries, and breweries. Pop. (1870) 7785; (1890) 25,090.
