Maintenance is a law-term commonly used to denote an illegal succouring of a person, as by lending money to a stranger in carrying on lawsuits. Contracts are sometimes held to be illegal on this ground. At Guildford, in July 1889, a man got six months' imprisonment with a fine of £200 for maintenance and Barratry (q.v.).
