Popocatepetl ('smoking mountain'), a volcano about 40 miles SE. of the city of Mexico. It rises in the form of a cone to a height of 17,784 feet above the sea-level. No eruption has been recorded since 1540; it still smokes, however. It is often scaled, and in and around its crater (5165 feet in diameter, and nearly 1000 deep) a good deal of sulphur is obtained.
