Rood

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 8: Peasant to Eoumelia, p. 797

Rood (a form of the word rod) is used of the Cross of Christ, the Holy Rood, and of crosses and crucifixes generally, but especially the great crucifix which in mediæval churches stood on the rood-screen (see SCREEN). As a measure of surface, a rood is the fourth part of an acre, and contains 40 square poles or perches, or 1210 square yards. The square rod or rood used in estimating mason-work is equal to 272\frac{1}{2} square feet.
