Sal Volatile,

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 9: Bound to Swansea, p. 129

Sal Volatile, a well-known remedy for faintness, consists essentially of a solution of carbonate of ammonia in alcohol. It contains in addition free ammonia and the volatile oils of lemon and nintmeg. As it is a strongly caustic liquid, it should never be taken unless well diluted with water. See SALTS (SMELLING), and AMMONIA.
