Thirlmere, a narrow sheet of water in the heart of the Lake District (q.v.), lying 533 feet above sea-level, and 3 miles long by mile wide, between Derwentwater and Grasmere. Since 1894 it serves as a water-supply for Manchester (q.v.); see also AQUEDUCT.
