Heights

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 5: Friday to Humanitarians, p. 622

Heights may be determined by four methods: by Trigonometry (q.v.), by Levelling (q.v.), by ascertaining and comparing the atmospheric pressure at top and bottom of the height by the Barometer (q.v.), or by ascertaining and comparing the boiling-point of water at the top and bottom by the Thermometer (q.v.).
